What You Should Know About All-on-4® and Bone Grafting

All On 4 Dental Implants Agoura Hills, CA

An All-on-4® restoration is an excellent option for those looking to replace their current dental structure with a complete set of new teeth. It is often more comfortable, and it can also increase the confidence level of those receiving them. If you consider getting this type of restoration, it’s important to understand how the process works and what may be involved. While it is often an ideal option for many, there are things to consider before moving forward in the procedure.

What is All-on-4?

This is a specific restoration that replaces both the upper and bottom teeth of the patient. This is typically an outpatient procedure that involves removing teeth, occasional bone grafting, and putting the replacement bridge. This can be a great alternative to other restoration methods, as you can expect the teeth to stay put and mimic your natural smile. This is usually preferred for individuals who have lost most of their teeth or find they are weakened. This could result from gum disease, poor dental habits, teeth grinding, cavities, or other medical disorders.

Preparation and process

When you are initially considering All-on-4, your dentist will look at your current dental state. You will be a good candidate for restoration if you have healthy gums and have a structural sound jawbone. This is critical, as the new teeth will be placed over screws inserted into your jaw. Your dentist may need to take some X-rays or other scans during the evaluation to ensure all is well before moving forward. You will then collaboratively come up with a treatment plan for the procedure.

Bone grafting

Bone grafting may be required before getting your procedure completed. This is necessary if the bone loss in the jaw would not allow a solid foundation for your new dental work. Since the jaw will be where screws are inserted, it must be strong and healthy before surgery. There are different types of material used for bone grafting, such as those from your own body or synthetic ones. If you require this procedure, you will be numbed by your dentist, and then grafting material will be added to the required area. Typically, there is some bruising and slight pain that can be remedied with over-the-counter medications.

Surgery

The surgery will usually take place in stages and different appointments due to healing time. After bone grafting (if required), you will have posts placed where the new bridge will be placed, after which months of healing may be necessary. If needed, the abutment will be placed, impressions will be made, and you will be able to choose your new smile! As with any dental hygiene, continue to brush regularly and follow up with your dentist. All-on-4 may require some time but is well worth it to increase your comfort, confidence, and functionality. To learn more, discuss if you are a good candidate with your dental provider.
